At 3 weeks of age, puppies are usually weaned from their mothers. During this transition period, it is essential to teach puppies to eat puppy food.
The process of “Transfer From Ti to Bowl”
When the puppy is 3 weeks old, you will start feeding the puppy about 10% of the calories per day. They will continue to breastfeed, while getting used to the puppy food. After 2-3 weeks, you will feed them more and less and they will suckle less. Do not rush to wean puppies while they are still eating slowly. This can lead to malnutrition.
You will need to separate the mother while feeding the puppy by walking the mother away just leaving the puppy with the food bowl. Sure they will whine at first. Then they will realize that their food bowl contains delicious and nutritious food. By week 7 puppies should be fully weaned and fed only puppy food.
Food for puppies
You can buy formula mixed with dry puppy food, soak the seeds in formula and pour into a shallow bowl when the puppy starts walking around at 3 weeks of age. Formula will provide additional nutrients. and help prevent puppies from choking on dry powder as they begin to learn to eat. In case your dog is still not able to chew food, you can grind the seeds with a blender and mix it with dog milk.
You should feed your puppy 3 times a day during weaning up to 6 months of age. After 6 months, they can be fed 2 times a day with increasing amounts per feed.
You should make it a habit to feed your puppy on time, this will tame the dog’s appetite and prevent them from meowing all day. When you switch to feeding 2 meals a day, you can skip lunch (the middle meal).
