Last week, the music world mourned the loss of Gordon Lightfoot, the iconic singer-songwriter, who passed away at the age of 84. Lightfoot, known for hit songs like “Sundown” and “If You Could Read My Mind,” was not only a legend in the folk music realm but also a beloved national figure in Canada.
A memorial service was held on May 7 in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario, at St. Paul’s United Church. It was the place where Lightfoot, true to his Canadian roots, sang in the choir as a teenager. His wish was to have his funeral service at this very church, which had played a significant role in his early life.
“He is the one that wanted it to be here, in this church that he grew up in,” St. Paul’s choir director Blair Bailey told CTV News.
The funeral was a small and private gathering, attended by 50 close friends and family members. However, local fans had an opportunity to pay their respects during a public visitation held on the preceding Sunday.
During this visitation, a touching and unexpected moment happened when a quiet mourner found solace by the side of the late musician—a dog named Taurus. Taurus belonged to one of Lightfoot’s touring companions, and they had formed a strong bond while on the road together. Taurus would often accompany Lightfoot on his tours and wait patiently by the stage.
Victoria Lord, Lightfoot’s longtime publicist, revealed, “He used to go on the road with him and wait for Gordon side stage. Gordon loved dogs.” This gesture of loyalty and companionship was touching and heartwarming, as Taurus remained by Lightfoot’s side even in his final moments.
It’s often said that you can judge a person by how they treat animals, and Taurus’s presence underscored the deep connection between Lightfoot and his four-legged friend. While Taurus may not have been Lightfoot’s own pet, their bond was evident, and the dog undoubtedly felt the loss keenly.
Gordon Lightfoot’s passing on May 1 marked the end of an era, but his music and legacy continue to resonate with fans worldwide. His contributions to folk music and his status as a Canadian cultural icon remain indelible. As fellow musicians and leaders like Bob Dylan and Justin Trudeau have attested, Gordon Lightfoot’s impact on the world of music and his beloved Canada is immeasurable.
