While all dogs have the ability to nip and bite, certain breeds have stronger bites than others because to their powerful jaws, huge teeth, and fearless personality.
When looking at dog breeds, keep in mind the elements that lead to biting events, such as anti-social behavior by irresponsible owners who train their dogs to be violent. Many dogs have been bred intentionally for intellect and power, while others may be the result of inadequate care.
Sarah-Jane White, a Norfolk-based animal behaviorist and trainer, has evaluated the strength of dogs by looking at the pounds per square inch (PSI) for each breed to assist us learn more about the dogs who bite.
1. German Shepherd
“The German Shepherd is a well-known breed for its power and intelligence,” Sarah-Jane White explains. “This breed is frequently utilized for police enforcement, military, and protection, with a biting power of 238-291 PSI. Because of their loyalty and obedience, German Shepherds are extremely popular as household pets. They are the ninth most popular dog in the United Kingdom.”
2. American Bulldog
“The Bulldog is a robust breed of dog with a very powerful bite,” Sarah-Jane adds. “This dog is not to be trifled with, as it has a biting force of 305 PSI! The American Bulldog is a breed you want on your side if you need a guard dog or protection. They are active and demand a lot of exercise, but they make excellent family pets.”
3. Rottweiler
“The Rottweiler is a large dog breed recognized for its strength and intelligence. With a biting force of 328 PSI, this breed can certainly compete with other animals. The Rottweiler is a powerful breed that is frequently employed as a security dog. With the proper training, they make wonderful companions.”
4. American Pit Bull Terrier
“The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed recognized for its drive and power. With a biting force of 240-330 PSI, this breed is capable of taking down larger game “Sarah-Jane elaborates.
“In the United States, pitbull terriers are lawful. However, pit bulls are prohibited in many Canadian towns and communities. Puerto Rico had a two-decade prohibition on the breed until 2018, when it was deemed lawful to own, sell, and import the breed again. They are illegal in the United Kingdom.”
5. Mastiff
“The Mastiff is another large breed of dog that is known for its strength and power. With a bite force of 556 PSI, this breed can easily overpower other animals. This is more than three times the bite force of an average dog.”
6. Cane Corso
Sarah-Jane continue: “The Cane Corso is a breed that is known for its power and strength. With a bite force of 650 PSI, this breed can take down prey much larger than itself.”
7. Turkish Kangal
“The Kangal Shepherd is a Turkish breed of dog that is known for its large size and impressive strength. With a bite force of 743 PSI, this breed is the undisputed king of the canine world when it comes to raw power. Typically used to protect against wolves, bears, and jackals in its native Turkey due to its intimidating size and capabilities as an effective guardian.
