Dogs are a lot of work; they need daily walks, food, grooming, medical care, training, and plenty of love and attention from their owners. However, there are dogs who are more readily pleased and cared for than others, and these dogs have varied needs.
The following list of dog breeds was compiled because of their minimal upkeep requirements. Most dogs are low maintenance, content with only a few of short walks each day, and laid-back in temperament. Obviously, every dog is different and has certain requirements, so you’ll have to be accommodating.
Greyhound
It may come as a surprise to learn that these show dogs need less care than the average dog. A couple of daily 30-minute walks should be plenty for them. The greyhound’s body was designed for speed, not endurance. They don’t mind being left alone for a while and don’t need much in the way of maintenance thanks to their short coat. Though they may attempt to hunt little furry things, these gentle giants normally make quick and easy adjustments to their new home and family.
Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu was developed in Japan for use in the hunt. They are much like cats in that they want to do things on their own and would probably jump on top of your refrigerator if given the chance. This similar temperament also means they may be left alone for long stretches of time than some other breeds of dog, so long as they have a secure, fenced-in area to play in and lots of toys to keep them stimulated. They shed quite a bit and need to be brushed often, but this is an easy task to do at home. Due to their moderate vigor, they need regular physical exercise and mental challenges like training.
Chihuahua
In spite of their reputation for sassiness, you may be shocked to hear that these tiny rockets thrive on their own. You’ll need to have a strong grasp on their training since they’re independent and obstinate, but if you provide them with lots of enrichment toys, they’ll gladly pass the time, particularly if they have a canine companion. The short-coated variety of the Chihuahua requires relatively little in the way of care and will be content with only a few daily walks.
Pug
This well-known breed is the ideal pet for those who want a low-maintenance pet. They need little in the way of exercise and, thanks to their short coat, may be content with a few games inside on wet days. They have calm dispositions and are content to snooze on the couch all day, so you can expect to find them in the same area when you return.
Dachshund
This well-known breed is the ideal pet for those who want a low-maintenance pet. They need little in the way of exercise and, thanks to their short coat, may be content with a few games inside on wet days. They have calm dispositions and are content to snooze on the couch all day, so you can expect to find them in the same area when you return.
Bulldog
If you’re a first-time dog owner in need of a calm pet, look no further than the classic bulldog. They became a symbol of the “British Bulldog Spirit” during WWII in the United Kingdom, although this renowned breed would much rather curl up on your lap than start a fight.
Some people may misunderstand a bulldog’s laid-back nature and mistake it for laziness, but the American Kennel Club says bulldogs “enjoy brisk walks and need regular moderate exercise.” Bulldogs are also well-suited to apartment life, though owners should be mindful of their dogs’ labored breathing in humid weather and make sure to feed them a healthy diet.
Collie
Because of their mild demeanor, Collies are excellent family pets. Collies are intelligent and eager to please, making them excellent family pets and reliable protectors.
Be ready to invest time into your new Collie’s well-being if you decide to make one part of your household. The American Kennel Club says that active, social dogs like these need plenty of playtimes and walk to be healthy.
Golden Retriever
When looking for a new family member, a golden retriever is a great choice since they are intelligent and devoted. One of the most popular types of dogs in America is the Golden Retriever because of its affable and accommodating nature.
Because Goldens like being outside just as much as they love being inside, they would make excellent weekend companions for individuals who want to spend their time in the great outdoors. According to the AKC, poodles “have a joyful and lively attitude to life and continue this puppyish demeanor throughout maturity.”
Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever has been deemed the most popular dog in the United States by the American Kennel Club (AKC), and it’s not hard to understand why. The popular breed is known for being a social, energetic, and outgoing roommate who quickly becomes a member of the family.
“They mingle well with neighbor dogs and people alike,” the AKC noted of Labs, but owners should be ready to commit to extended games of fetch and other workouts to maintain their dog in peak physical and mental condition.
Beagle
The beagle is living proof that you don’t need a lot of space to do a lot. When paired with a caring person, this breed’s natural loyalty and friendliness show through.
Though they need early training to break bad behaviors and ongoing care, poodles are a great choice for a family’s first pet. If you can’t decide between getting one or two beagles, you needn’t worry about the dogs getting along.
